a road oft travelled"},"content":{"rendered":"What is it that makes us travel fast\r\nAlways intent on the destination\r\nNever taking the time to stop\r\nFor needless or even needed\r\nBreaks, pauses, reflective moments\r\nAnd really there is no sound excuse\r\nFreeways have rest stops there to use\r\nAnd when I need to rest\r\nI have no trouble pulling in\r\nI’ve done it on I-90 in the States\r\nI’ve done it on 401 passed Ontario gates\r\nI’ve done it on a prairie route\r\nI’ve done it by small towns too\r\n\r\nI have traveled a thousand roads I’m sure\r\nAlways headed for somewhere else\r\nNot always without time to spare\r\nNot always with a deadline there\r\nAnd yet I can hardly think of once\r\nWhen I simply turned off the path\r\nTo visit someone or some place\r\nAnd show a little bit of grace\r\nTo those who were along the way\r\n\r\nI missed a chance when I was young\r\nTo see a wise but elderly soul\r\nBecause I felt I had to get\r\nTo the next place upon my list\r\nIt happened again before school was done\r\nAnd then it seemed to simply become\r\nThe norm, the usual, the way to travel\r\n\r\nIn looking back it is hard to count\r\nThe people who were dear to me\r\nYet not seemingly dear enough\r\nTo turn the car, to slow the pace\r\nI can think of times on late night drives\r\nOr when the sun was barely up\r\nThat it seemed so easy to simply say\r\nThey will be asleep upon the hay\r\n\r\nSometimes it was a relative long lost\r\nBut more often it was a special friend\r\nOne whom no doubt I thought\r\nWould like to see me and to visit\r\nTo reminisce about some time\r\nNow lost in my own memory bank\r\n\r\nLike investments long since put aside\r\nIn some old drawer or safety box\r\nThese people sat as past I sped\r\nAlone at home or even at their work\r\nEven when I said I’d come next time\r\nI really knew it would not be\r\n\r\nI don’t read obituaries very much\r\nThey only remind me that I double-clutched\r\nAnd couldn’t stop and turn within\r\nWorried my travel clock would unwind\r\nAnd now they’re gone\r\nTo their reward I think\r\nAnd I still sail past their homes\r\nWith nary a wandering blink\r\n\r\nStill trying to reach some destined shore\r\nAs if the ferry only runs one time more\r\nAnd missing all the good thoughts\r\nAnd the special vibes\r\nThat those people would have shared\r\nAnd in the hectic drive downwind\r\nI always arrive a way too soone\r\nAnd sit and ponder\r\nWhile I await\r\nThe timing of the arrival goal\r\n\r\nThe irony is that in days of yore\r\nWhen trains were at the fore\r\nThere was an excuse for going past\r\nIt was the engineer that was too fast\r\nBut as many a song now tells us\r\nTrains have left us for the bus\r\nSo there is really no excuse\r\nFor to try is only to confuse\r\n\r\nIt happened again not long ago\r\nI was even phoned and invited\r\nHe was a friend, his wife was too\r\nBut I had stuff to do and say\r\nAnd he could wait one more day\r\nToo soon I learned that he did not\r\nAnd now he’s gone without a thought\r\nOr even prayer said in his stead\r\nThe road oft traveled again misled\r\n\r\nWhere did this hurry come like a race\r\nWhy do I not learn to slow down my pace\r\nWhat final destination now is so dear\r\nThat I can bypass those right here\r\nPerhaps I need to simply say\r\nSo long, I’m gone\r\nBut don’t you mind\r\nI will think of you\r\nWhen next I stop\r\nAnd wait\r\nfor the ferry\r\nOr maybe\r\nit’s a plane\r\nIt really doesn’t matter much\r\nFor I am early\r\nAnd have time to think of such \r\n\r\ng.w.\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What is it that makes us travel fast Always intent on the destination Never taking the time to
