The Jamaica Experience Continued
Still at Treasure Beach, Easter Sunday saw the sunrise over the water, shining warmly on the volcanic rock & sand as well as the gentle surf. It was very special, very personal. Took it all in for a couple of hours before the rest of the multitude joined me on the deck (and by which time, the sun was beaming down from high above us all).
There was a Church of God next to the resort, so we decided to go to their Easter Service. It turned out to be quite pentecostal. There were about two dozen people including perhaps six kids and four males. There were considerable singing before the service (some of which at the outset seemed like practicing) and then about twenty minutes more to kick off the service. Then there was one official hymn with the words on the screen for all to see & sing; but, this was only sang through once completely. A jointly (by all present) read scripture lesson from Matthew dealing with the rolling away of the stone and Jesus meeting the women. This was immediately followed by a sermon of a couple of minutes which led into a number of testimonials backed by the hymns that were not shown on the screen, but sang vigorously by some of the leading voices of the congregation. There were then of special prayers including a unique and very beautiful soloist.
More prayers and gospel songs known to the members (they were not put on the screen) seemed to reinvigorate the congregation. At about the seventy-five [75] minute mark, while announcements were being made/read, we departed!!
In the afternoon we were driven to a fairly long beach with volcanic (dark) sand. After a long walk observing the fishing boats and coming across petrified coral, the noise from some younger folk’s boom boxes, etc was such that we were advised to check out another beach which was quieter. This was a delightful discovery as there was a very authentic beachside pub. We had a beer or two while we waited for our dinner. One scene we watched was the return of some fishing boats as well as some tour vessels. After observing a fairly rapid sunset, the meals finally came and they definitely were worth waiting for…
Easter 2025 was a great, memorable day!!
Reflectively yours,
