In Memoriam — Dr. Teeya Scholten

Teeya came into my world early in this millennium. She made a presentation to a group of us who were involved in private & public training institutions in Calgary. She was emphasizing new ways of psychologically improving the learning of our students. The main thing I remember about that day was her energy. Only one other Psychologist had ever shown me such professional commitment in an energetic and almost addictive way (Dr. Carolyn Manchur of SFU). She was funny, yet informative; she was bright, but very down-to-earth. After the session I invited her to lunch and we had a very spirited and constructive conversation.

I was intrigued by some of her ideas and approaches. While I thought I could help her develop a more focused strategic plan for her practice, I also knew a couple of individuals who would work well with her. One of the introductions was very positive and they did some collaboration. I also shared some of her Empowerment Plus materials with colleagues who I knew would find the information helpful in their work and in their organizations (especially those dealing with ADHD).

After I left Calgary, we continued to keep in touch. She was always full of new ideas or reports on the results of the applications of ideas we had earlier discussed. She also had a sense of humour which I enjoyed. And her husband Nico was equally intellectually engaging. In fact they came to visit in PEI and it was a delightful time.

After she retired from private practice our interactions diminished in part because my teaching loads likewise were reduced and so I had fewer networks to share her materials &/or persona. But I will be eternally grateful to her as she was the principal psychologist who diagnosed my ADHD condition (quite late in my life’s journey) and helped me understand some of the off-beat natures of my being as well as better recognizing the many unique twists in my life journey including problems in schooling (starting almost in Grade 1, but continuing through to my doctoral days). Her expertise in this field was deep and yet very applied.

I was shocked to hear of her death and saddened to realize I will never have another dynamic, humorous, and educational conversation with her. Teeya was unique. Teeya was special. My condolences to Nico and the family.

In reflection,

g.w.
